QO @ PSU

Since its founding in 2017, Queer Opera has been housed at and supported by Portland State University in Portland, OR. The urban setting, generous administration, welcoming faculty, and innovative student body is the perfect environment for a program like Queer Opera to thrive.

The School of Music & Theater within The College of the Arts at PSU is a vibrant department offering Bachelors and Masters degrees in several music disciplines, including the new professional degree in Sonic Arts and Music Production.

The diversity of personal expression and gender identity in Portland continues to serve as inspiration for QO and its productions. In addition, the willingness for audiences to attend and support new artistic ventures is the example we need to continue this important work.

Land Acknowledgement

Portland State University is located in the heart of downtown Portland, Oregon in Multnomah County.

Queer Opera honors the Indigenous people whose traditional and ancestral homelands we are privileged to stand on, the Multnomah, Kathlamet, Clackamas, Tumwater, Watlala bands of the Chinook, the Tualatin Kalapuya and many other Indigenous nations of the Columbia River.

It is important to acknowledge the ancestors of this place and to recognize that we are here because of the sacrifices forced upon them.

In remembering these communities, we honor their legacy, their lives, and their descendants.

The nationally renowned Portland State University Opera is one of the most well-established music ensembles within our Music program. Because of its overwhelming amount of support from the community (over 2500 people attend each year) and PSU’s focus on undergraduate performance experience, there are plenty of roles for talented undergrads.
